Lawyer prays Supreme Court to reverse renaming of Kotoka International Airport

A private legal practitioner, Austin Brako Powers, has petitioned the Supreme Court to reverse the renaming of the Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.
Mr Powers claims that the name change is illegal.

In a writ sighted by 3news, he sought “A declaration that the General Kotoka Trust Decree, 1969 (NLCD 339), being an existing law within the meaning of Article 11(1)(d) and 11(4) of the Constitution, remains valid and binding unless amended or repealed in accordance with law.”
Mr Powers further sought “A declaration that the purported renaming of Kotoka International Airport to “Accra International Airport” without an amendment or repeal of General Kotoka Trust Decree, 1969 (NLCD 339) is inconsistent with and in contravention of Articles 11(1)(d), 11(4) of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, 1992, and Paragraph 8(1)(a) of the General Kotoka Trust Decree, 1969 (NLCD 339).”

“A declaration that any Executive order purportedly issued to effect the renaming of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, in the absence of legislative amendment to NLCD 339, is null, void, and of no legal effect,” the writ dated March 18 further demanded.

He is therefore asking for “An order annulling the reversion of the Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport for contravening Article 11 of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, 1992, and Paragraph 8(1)(a) of the General Kotoka Trust Decree, 1969 (NLCD 339).
