General Mosquito narrowly pips Julius Debrah in bid to replace Mahama as NDC flagbearer – APL survey

National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is leading the race to become the party’s next flagbearer with a narrow margin, a survey by the Africa Policy Lens (APL), has revealed.

In the poll released on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, which sought the views of NDC actors across the country, Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as ‘General Mosquito’ led Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, narrowly in the survey described as “near even” by the APL.
Asiedu Nketia polled 31.9% of the polls to emerge as the leader over Julius Debrah, who polled a close 30.1%.

The two emerged as frontrunners in the race, securing over 60%, leaving a significant gap between them and the other contenders.

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, follows at 3rd place with 17.9% while Finance Minister, Dr. Casiel Ato Baah Forson, came next with 13.1%.
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang follows at a distance 5th place with a paltry 3. 6% with Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa at 1.0%. Others pit together by APL, secured 2.5%.

According to APL, the poll was conducted across all 276 constituencies, adding that the study “provides a timely snapshot of support levels, voting intentions, perceptions of candidate competitiveness, and the key factors shaping leadership preferences within the party.”

“The results offer valuable insight into an increasingly competitive and evolving contest, highlighting both the leading contenders and the broader considerations influencing decision-making among party actors at the grassroots level.”
