Bawumia spent 8 years chasing a runaway dollar – Asiedu Nketiah jabs NPP flagbearer

National Chairman of the rulling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has taken a swipe at the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over his failure to strethen the value of the cedi against foreign currencies.

The NDC Chairman, in a critique accused former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of failing Ghanaians economically, saying he “wasted eight years chasing a runaway dollar” that the current administration under John Dramani Mahama has “firmly locked down in just six months.”

Speaking at Jirapa as part of his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Upper West Region, Asiedu Nketiah said the previous administration, led by Dr Bawumia as head of the Economic Management team, failed to stabilise the cedi despite nearly a decade in office.
“Everybody says that our government is doing well. They point to the fact that we have been able to arrest the dollar which somebody took eight years trying to arrest but failed. We have just used six months to arrest that dollar, and it has never escaped up to now,” he stated.

Asiedu Nketiah further argued that the NDC government has also made rapid progress in reducing inflation, claiming that while the previous administration struggled over eight years, the current government has brought inflation down in less than a year.
Beyond the economic critique, the NDC Chairman outlined plans to increase the District Assemblies Common Fund allocation from 80 per cent to 90 per cent.

He explained that the move would empower local assemblies to tackle basic community needs such as classroom blocks, sanitation facilities, primary healthcare centres, and water supply systems.

According to him, strengthening local development would allow President Mahama to focus on broader national priorities while ensuring that grassroots concerns are addressed efficiently.
He also used the occasion to urge party branches to remain united and committed, noting that the perceived performance of the government should serve as motivation to consolidate support across the region.
The ‘Thank You Tour’ forms part of efforts by the NDC leadership to express appreciation to supporters and reinforce the party’s presence in the Upper West Region.
