UWR: Epilepsy cases declined in 2025

Epilepsy cases in Ghana’s Upper West Region are showing a decline. According to data from the Regional Health Directorate, the region reported 1,068 cases in 2023, which decreased to 747 cases in 2024 and further dropped to 641 cases in 2025.

Despite this decline, health authorities said epilepsy remains a significant health concern in the region, with causes attributed to factors like brain tumours, chemical imbalance, head injuries, and birth complications.

Sylvester Basagnia, the Upper West Regional Mental Health Officer, is appealing for stakeholders’ support to further reduce or improve the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues.

According to him, despite efforts by the Regional Health Directorate to address the issue, yet challenges persist, including limited access to diagnostic equipment and treatment.

Epilepsy affects approximately 270,000 people in Ghana, with 70 per cent not receiving treatment.

The condition is the most prevalent neuropsychiatric condition reported in rural health institutions and is among the top five medical conditions in the country.
