The principal streets of Wa were filled with a massive crowd on December 1, 2024, as the President of Jamaica Youth, Hassim Alhassan, popularly known as Sisco, led a peace walk aimed at fostering unity and promoting peace in the region. The event, themed “Peace Before, During, and After Elections,” brought together youth from various political backgrounds and social groups across the municipality in a show of solidarity.
The peace walk, one of the largest ever organized in Wa, saw participants marching, singing, and dancing through the streets while spreading messages of peace. Youth groups representing different political parties united under one cause, demonstrating the region’s commitment to a violence-free electoral process.
Addressing the crowd, Sisco, a revered youth figure and role model in the Upper West Region, urged the youth to prioritize peace in all their activities, especially as the country prepares for upcoming elections.
“We must do everything possible to maintain peace before, during, and after the elections,” Sisco emphasized. “Violence will only set us back, and it is our duty as the youth to protect the peace and stability of our community.”
Sisco’s call for peace resonated with many as he highlighted the importance of avoiding violent behaviors that could disrupt harmony.
The event also featured prominent officials from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Peace Council, who took the opportunity to address the youth. They encouraged them to lead by example in their communities and work together to ensure peaceful coexistence, regardless of political affiliations.
The day concluded with a friendly football match between Jamaica Youth and Zongo Youth Alliance, symbolizing the spirit of unity and healthy competition. The match ended with a 2-1 victory for the Jamaica Youth team, adding a celebratory tone to the event.
The peace walk, spearheaded by Sisco and supported by various youth organizations, left a lasting impact on the community, reinforcing the message that peace is a collective responsibility.
This initiative underscores the critical role youth can play in fostering peace and stability, not only in Wa but across the Upper West Region.
