Our members are finding it difficult to raise families due to the walloping economic hardship they find themselves – Teacher unions

Three teacher unions comprising of NAGRAT, GNAT and CCT-GH have detailed the harrowing economic hardship their members are going through over the failure of government to settle their long-standing allowances.

They made this known during a press conference held in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region to drum home their concerns.

The three teacher unions comprising of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-GH) have issued the government a one-week ultimatum to address its conditions of service.

Felix Owusu–Ansah, Upper West Regional Secretary of GNAT while addressing the press said “since the negotiation of our collective agreement in 2009 and after the 2020 collective agreement, the unions have know no peace, owing to the government’s continued failure to implement the allowances agreed on, as well as fulfil promises given”.

He said due to several considerations, the initial seventeen allowances were reduced to four. It is on this note that they demanded the full implementation of: the deprived area allowances, the extra duty or assessment allowance, the book/data/online teaching support allowance and the upward adjustment of the CPD allowances.

“Despite this gesture of good faith from the Unions, the government is still adamant and has demonstrated bad faith”, he added.

On his part, Harrun  Ussif  Kadir, Regional Chairman of NAGRAT disagreed with the Upper West Regional Minister’s call for a continuous dialogue over the issue since according to him, the negotiations had been ongoing for the past 15 years without any favourable outcome.
