On August 26, 2024, the Rt. Hon Speaker of the 8th Parliament of Ghana Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in his bid to promote sports and Community development in the Upper West Region, has commissioned an Astroturf at McCoy College of Education in Nadowli/Kaleo District.
According to the Speaker, the state-of-the-art sports facility was sponsored by his office with the support of Ghana Gas and Wembley Sports Construction Company as part of his dedication to growing young talents in the region.
The Principal of McCoy College of Education in Nadowli in the Upper West Region of Ghana, Rev. Fr. Peter Paul Yelletuo described the sports facility as a symbol of the deep commitment to the development of the youth and the enhancement of their educational experience. Adding that, students will now have access to world-class facilities that will support their physical development, foster teamwork, and breed healthy minds.
“The construction of this stadium project, brought to us through the initiative and dedication of the Honorable Speaker of Parliament, is a testament to the power of visionary leadership. This stadium is not just a structure of bricks and mortar. It represents hope, opportunity, and the future of our young people”.
Rev. Fr. Yelletuo opin that the stadium will undoubtedly contribute to the holistic growth of the students and youth within the Nadowli/Kaleo District and many areas within the region.
The Principal of McCoy College of Education further indicated that the facility will serve as a hub for the entire community of Nadowli, a place where they will gather to celebrate, to compete and to unite.
Addressing the audience at the commissioning ceremony, the Principal said the multipurpose sports facility will open up opportunities for hosting regional and national events, putting the college and community on the map as a center for excellence in sports and education.
On his part, the Ceo of Wembley Sports Construction Company Robert Coleman revealed that, the kind of astro turf they have delivered is one of the first-class you can have in the whole of West Africa. Indicating the grass is from CC grass in China, FIFA’s number one preferred user grass.
“We have floodlights that we are fitted here, that we can play football at night, just as we have done in other constituencies in the country, 8 running tracks, 110×75 pitch, a volleyball court and a fence”, Coleman said.
The Contractor noted that due to the efforts the Rt Hon Speaker of Parliament, there are significant qualities that distinguish the McCoy astroturf from the rest being constructed in other constituencies. This he said include, changing rooms for, team A and team B, Officiating team room, public washrooms for spectators, and spectators stand with a sitting capacity of over thousand.
Meanwhile earlier in the day the Rt Hon Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, cut sod for the construction of the first face of a sports stadium for SDD-University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD –UBIDS). The region’s first University.
