Let’s taste Dr Bawumia’s leadership – Minister urges voters

Hon. Stephen Yakubu, the Upper West Regional Minister has emphasized the importance of political diversity and encouraged the chiefs and their communities to consider the upcoming 2024 presidential elections with an open mind.

Addressing the Chiefs and people in separate visits to the 13 paramountcies in the Upper West Region, Hon. Yakubu used a familiar analogy to make his point, comparing the political landscape to a mother preparing a popular local dish, TZ.

“No matter how many children you have, if your mother is the one preparing the TZ that day, by all means, you will get some,” he explained.

This analogy underscored his belief that everyone should have a fair chance to benefit from leadership, regardless of political affiliations.

He highlighted the unique situation in the upcoming 2024 elections, where two prominent northern candidates, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama, are contesting for the presidency.

“This time around, 2024, we have two northerners who are contesting. We have Bawumia and then we have His Excellency John Dramani,” Hon. Yakubu noted.

Urging the chiefs to consider giving Dr Bawumia a chance, he said, “You have tasted His Excellency John Dramani, but you have not tasted His Excellency Bawumia. It is always good to taste things, to see where you want to settle.”

He suggested that electing Dr. Bawumia in 2024 would provide an opportunity to evaluate his leadership.

“If he is sweet, then we hold him. If he is not sweet, the law of this country gives us four years to change our mind,” Hon. Yakubu continued.

He stressed the democratic process, reminding the chiefs that the electorate has the power to change their leaders every four years if they are not satisfied with their performance.

Yakubu elaborated on the benefits of this approach, stating, “When you taste him in 2024, and he becomes the President in 2025, then you will see whether he will be able to do more than your other son you have tasted.”

This, he argued, is a practical way to ensure that leaders are held accountable and that their performance is continuously evaluated.

The Minister’s speech was aimed at encouraging the paramount chiefs and their communities to remain open-minded and to consider the merits of each candidate based on their performance and potential.

“If he does better, then we hold him. If he doesn’t do better, in 2028, you can then decide to change your mind,” Yakubu concluded.
