Residents of Zanko in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region are appealing for urgent support to rehabilitate the Zanko Junior High School after a heavy rainstorm ripped off the roof of the school’s classroom block, severely disrupting teaching and learning activities.
The affected school block, constructed with mud bricks, now appears badly damaged and weakened following the storm. Sections of the roofing sheets were ripped off, exposing classrooms to harsh weather conditions, while parts of the walls and window areas show visible cracks and deterioration.
Some portions of the remaining roof also appear unstable, raising safety concerns among residents and school authorities.
Community members say the destruction has left students without adequate classrooms, forcing many to study under trees or return home whenever it rains.
Speaking on the situation, PTA Chairman Peter Yelbany said the school was originally constructed through communal labour using locally made bricks, demonstrating the community’s commitment to education despite limited resources.
According to him, the destruction of the roof has made teaching and learning extremely difficult for both students and teachers.
Former PTA Chairman Sidique Amadu also expressed concern about the deteriorating condition of the school building, warning that loose and falling bricks pose a serious danger to students and staff.
He further noted that teachers at the school lack offices and accommodation, a situation he said continues to affect effective teaching and supervision.
Residents say the poor condition of the classroom block has created an unsafe learning environment, particularly during the rainy season, and requires urgent intervention.
The community is therefore calling on the government, non-governmental organisations, Member of Parliament, philanthropists, and other stakeholders to support efforts to reroof and renovate the school.
They believe immediate assistance is necessary to restore safe and conducive learning conditions for students in the community.
