UWR: Traders lament poor state of the Hain market, demand completion

Traders and residents of Hain in the Jirapa Municipality in the Upper West Region are calling on the government, local authorities, and development partners to complete and upgrade the Hain Market, a crucial economic hub in the region.

The market, initiated in 2000, has remained unfinished for over 26 years, despite being a significant revenue source for the Jirapa Municipality.

In 2025, Hain market generated 61 per cent of the municipality’s revenue, outperforming all other councils combined.

“Hain is not merely a contributor to municipal revenue, it is the economic engine of the Jirapa Municipality,” Joseh Viele.

Speaking shortly after a peaceful protest organised by the residents at Hain, on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, to drum home the attention of stakeholders, the Zonal Council Chairman, Joseph Viele said urged authorities to complete the market and upgrade it to a 24-hour economy market, which would boost trade, create jobs, and improve revenue collection.

“We are calling for fairness, equity, and evidence-based development,” Joseph stated.

Adding that “the Hain Market represents opportunity, dignity, and economic resilience for thousands of traders and families.”

The call has been echoed by traditional authorities, Assembly Members, and opinion leaders, who emphasise the need for accountability and strategic investment in the market.

Naa Imoru Abdul-Kawue, Chief of Lang-wuolo

Naa Imoru Abdul-Kawue, Chief of Lang-wuolo, sounded the alarm on the long-standing absence of a proper market structure, forcing traders to operate under makeshift conditions.

“Hain fetches the water, and others drink it,” the Chief stated, highlighting the stark contrast between the market’s significant revenue contribution and its deplorable state.

He said traders endure harsh weather conditions, with no proper stalls, sanitation facilities, or storage spaces, yet faithfully pay tolls and levies to the Jirapa Municipal Assembly.

The Chief’s words echoed a sense of frustration and urgency, emphasising that the neglect is unjust and demands immediate attention.

“Development cannot continue to overlook the very community that sustains the local economy,” the chief stressed.

The community is calling on the Jirapa Municipal Assembly, government agencies, and development partners to construct a modern, well-planned market facility, worthy of Hain’s contribution to the municipality.

Some traders equally expressed their frustrations.
